There are a ton of sites where you can create, upload, share or host content online and we want you to be able to feature all of it on your Alumni Spaces site. To make it easier for content from other sites to look great on your site, you can "embed" it on your site.
Embedding is just a term that means "insert content from some other site into this site." Anytime you've watched a YouTube video on another site (like this Taylor Swift music video), it was an embedded video - the video is still on YouTube, but you can watch it on Billboard.com.
For most of the most popular sites, all you have to do is add the URL to your post when editing a News Update, Activity or Page and the editor will automatically embed the content. Here is a quick example of a page dedicated to Darkwing Duck, featuring content from Spotify, SoundCloud, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.
For any of the sites listed here, you just paste the URL of your content and it will be magically added to the page automatically.
That includes these services:
- TED Videos
Other sites might provide code for you to embed on your site and even though it isn't quite as magic, it is still pretty easy. For example, an Ole Miss Group in Texas offers custom license plates from MyPlates.com and they have an interactive piece of code that lets people order plates right from their site. So, they copied the code from MyPlates.com and added it to their Alumni Spaces site like this:
The few short steps are:
- Get code from the site you want to embed (this is usually an iframe or <embed>)
- Edit your content and make sure you select the "Text" tab of the editor.
- Paste the code into the Text tab
- Save your changes
- Check your site to see how it looks
Embedding content might sound complicated, but it's actually pretty easy and a great way to share interactive content around the internet. If you need any help adding or displaying embedded content, just let us know.
